Description
DESERT CANDLES AND MONOLOPIA SUPERBLOOM IN THE TEMBLORS by Lynn Bauer - The hills burst into life in 2017 after a season of rain, which California had not seen in many years. The Carrizo Plain had a wildflower explosion know as the "Superbloom of 2017." This area is the Temblor Mountain Range that borders one side of the Carrizo. The bright yellow flowers are monolopia and the tall flower stalks with the red flower at the top are called "desert candles." Desert candles are a somewhat rare flower, but in 2017 we saw many thousands of them in this area!! On the far hill, there is a patch of purple phacelia that ads a splash of contrasting color.
The Carrizo Plain runs from Bakersfield in Kern County up to San Luis Obispo County to the north. It is an amazing area and is especially beautiful when we have had rain!
