Description
CHANGING SEASONS IN LITTLE LAKES VALLEY by Lynn Bauer - Summer has passed and fall is a fleeting season in the High Sierra Mountains of California. The grasses reflect the fall season, but a dusting of snow on the distant mountain tops tells the real story. It won't be long before this beautiful valley, which is part of the John Muir Wilderness, will be blanketed in snow, and the only people to see it will be the true adventurers who snowshoe in.
This peaceful scene was captured along the hiking trail that passes by at least seven lakes. After some research, I have come to believe that this is Ruby Creek, which flows into Heart Lake. A small bridge crosses over the stream to allow hikers access to the other side without having to wade through the water. It is one of the very few manmade things you will find out here. For the most part, this is a very pristine wilderness area, unrivaled in it's beauty.
The trailhead for this area starts at the top of Rock Creek Road, above Rock Creek Lake (between the towns of Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, off Highway 395 in California) at a campground called "Mosquito Flats." It is a well-known hiking destination for both day hikers and back packers. This is part of the Inyo National Forest.
