KEEPING WATCH by Lynn Bauer - A tiny male Allen's hummingbird sits on a branch in a jacaranda tree, keeping watch over "his" yard! Hummingbirds are incredible territorial birds, and this little guy monitors the entire yard...from feeders hanging on the patio, to the flowers in the flower beds in every corner of the yard. On this day, he has chosen a place in the shade, among the fern-like branches of the beautiful jacaranda. Light dances through the lacy leaves, creating a wonderful backdrop of bokeh.
Taken in a back yard garden in Southern California. Some hummingbirds are year-round residents in this area, including Anna's, Costas, and these cute little Allen's. Others, such as Black-chinned, rufous, calliope, and a few others migrate through in the spring and/or fall. It's always pure pleasure to see who shows up at the feeders!
