Description
HISTORIC KNIGHT WHEEL by Lynn Bauer is a point of interest in the town of Mammoth Lakes, California. This is an old wheel that was hauled originally from Mojave to Mill City in 1878, and then to Mammoth in 1895 where is was used for processing gold. In 1902 it was moved to it's present location, along Old Mammoth Highway just west of Minaret Road, and converted to an electric generating plant for the Wildasinn Hotel. The rustic barn-type building that sits next to the wheel was used to house a generator. This is the oldest known building in Mammoth and is being preserved by the Southern Mono Historical Society.
The town of Mammoth Lakes is located in the beautiful Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, and sits just over the hill from Yosemite National Park.
